Residential plumbing, Charlottesville

We call before we come, and clean up before we go.

Whitaker Plumbing is Haley Whitaker and four technicians in three vans. Every visit follows one written protocol for how we enter your home, work in it and leave it.

  • Licensed and insured, number in the footer
  • A written price before work starts

Our protocol

How we come into your home

Five things happen on every visit, in this order. They are written down, and every technician on the crew follows them.

  1. 01

    Step 1: We call ahead

The office calls or texts the evening before, and the technician calls again when the van is on the way. Nobody finds a stranger at the door. If the time stops suiting you, we move it.

  2. 02

Step 2: Shoe covers go on

Clean covers go over our boots at your door, every visit and every room. Each technician carries a fresh pair for the day.

Blue shoe covers being pulled over a pair of shoes
  3. 03

Step 3: Drop cloths go down

Floors and furniture along our path are covered before a tool comes out of the bag, from the door to the fixture. The work area is kept to one corner of the room.

Pliers, wrenches and a hammer laid out on a canvas drop cloth
  4. 04

Step 4: We keep a photo record

We photograph what we find before we touch it and again when the work is done, then send you the pictures with a short written note. You see what was behind the wall, and the record stays with your house.

  5. 05

Step 5: We clean up, then walk it with you

Tools out, cloths up, floors wiped, old parts and trash taken with us. Before we leave, the technician walks the job with you, and nothing is invoiced until you have seen it.

What we plumb

Plumbing for houses people live in

Repairs, replacements and renovation plumbing in and around Charlottesville. We don't take on new subdivisions or commercial buildings.

  • Leaks and repairs

Dripping supply lines, running toilets, stuck shutoff valves and the slow leak under the sink you keep emptying a bowl for.

  • Faucets, toilets and fixtures

Replacement and new installs, including fixtures a designer or you have chosen and bought.

  • Water heaters

Tank replacement, and a look at the vent, the pan and the shutoff while we are there.

  • Drains and clogs

Sinks, tubs and the stack. We run a camera when a clog keeps coming back.

  • Kitchen and bath plumbing

Rough-in and finish for remodels, worked to your contractor's schedule, with finished floors protected.

  • Old pipe replacement

Galvanized, polybutylene and failing copper replaced in the order that opens the fewest walls.

Older owners and designers

For people who would rather not rearrange the house

Tell us what you need and we plan around it.

If you are an older owner, the technician tells you which rooms they will enter, moves nothing heavy without asking, and sits down with you for the walk-through. If you are a designer, we work from your fixture schedule and install date, protect finished surfaces, and send rough-in photos before the wall closes.

  • We ask who will be home, and which room is off limits

  • We move nothing heavy without asking first

  • Rough-in photos go to you before the wall is closed

  • One person from our office stays your contact

After the visit

“They called the evening before and again from the road. The technician put on shoe covers at the door and laid cloth the whole way to the kitchen. I did not have to ask for any of it.”

Marjorie P.Homeowner, Belmont

“I send a fixture schedule and an install date. The rough-in photos reached me before the wall closed, which saved me a trip, and the new tile was never touched.”

Dawn L.Interior designer, Charlottesville

“Pictures of the old pipe came to my phone before it was cut out. The floor was cleaner when they left than when they came, and they walked me through it before they packed up.”

Before you book

The questions we are asked most before a first visit.

Do I need to be home?

An adult you trust should be there to let us in and to walk the job with the technician at the end. If that is not you, tell us who, and we will call that person instead.

Will you move my furniture?

We cover what is on our path and keep the work to one corner of the room. We move nothing heavy without asking first, and we put back what we move.

Can you work with my designer or contractor?

Yes. Send the fixture schedule and the install date, and we will confirm the order of work with them. Rough-in photos go to you and to them before a wall is closed.

Do you pull permits?

Some work needs a permit from the city or the county. When yours does, the written price says so and shows the permit as its own line.

What if you find a bigger problem than the one I called about?

We stop, show you a photograph of what we found, and write a new price before going on. Nothing is added to the work without your yes.
